An early edition, published in 1948, six years after the first limited and signed edition. A good copy of this collection of short stories by acclaimed author Evelyn Waugh. Pages are bright and clean, with just some spotting to the textblock edge. Dustwrapper is sound, though spotted, with just some slight chipping in a couple of places. In a blue cloth binding with original unclipped dustwrapper. Including 'Mr Loveday's Little Outing', 'Winner Takes All', 'Excursion in Reality' and others. The novel was never completed fragments were eventually published under the title 'Work Suspended'. Work on this project ceased when in December Waugh was commissioned into the Royal Marines and began training at Chatham naval base. He also began a novel, in a new style using first-person narration. At the outbreak of the war in September 1939, Waugh left Piers Court and moved his young family to Pixton Park in Somerset, the Herbert family's country seat, while he sought military employment. Uniform edition, published the same year as the first. A collection of short stories from Evelyn Waugh. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. The first copy that we have handled to date. His brief preface to 'Mr Woollcott' suggests that he thought this was his best writing, though unsuited to the world after the outbreak of the war. When he succeeded, the daily training regimen meant that he was not able to continue writing the piece. Written during the author's stint at Pixton Park, his wife's family's country estate, while Waugh was trying to become an officer. The book has been signed (without dedication) by Evelyn Waugh to the title page. A little spotted but this not detract from its appearance - The wrapper remains very attractive in the removable Brodart archival cover. The red lettering to the spine remains bright.

A small closed tear to the upper front panel. It is in remarkable condition for its age being a little nicked and rubbed in places more-so at the spine ends. The WRAPPER is complete and is VERY GOOD++ or better condition. A little toning and spotting to the text block but the pages remain clean. Gilt titling to the spine remains bright.
